Tooth Whitening - Is Tooth Whitening Safe? - A Nurse Tells the Truth!

If you've been thinking about getting your teeth whitened either at a dentist's office or doing it yourself at home you may want to consider some of the facts about tooth whitening and tooth whitening products whether Zoom, laser teeth whitening, strips, gels, kits or systems. Of course people seem to always want real white teeth or even whiter teeth but one must weigh the benefits against the risks when considering it.

Although many tooth whitening products claim to be safe there can be consequences for using them. First of all ask around and get testimonials from others who are using either tooth whitening products at home or have had professional tooth whitening done at their dentist's office. You'll find that many of them will tell you they suffered pain after getting their teeth whitened - a sensitivity that didn't easily go away.

So you want to make sure and ask your dentist if the tooth whitening process he or she uses is one that is going to hurt after it is done or make your teeth more sensitive. I remember a radio talk show host one day complaining how much her teeth hurt for hours after she had her teeth whitened at her dentist's office.

Some of the side effects of tooth whitening besides tooth sensitivity are gum irritation, bluish enamel and even an uneven look to the whiteness. These seem harmless and may be something that may or may not disappear.

But even worse is the possibility that the whitening or bleaching chemical could seep into a tooth that is cracked or into a cavity. This could cause some internal damage and might even result in your having to have an expensive root canal.

Some of this may clear up in a week or two especially the pain and sensitivity if you've discontinued or stopped using tooth whiteners and/or stopped dentist visits for this purpose.

If you have a lot of fillings, crowns, bridges and other dental work or if you have a lot of dark stains then check with your dentist before you undergo any treatment at home or professionally.

Some people are addicted to tooth whitening and they are doing more damage then they realize. And they may suffer from permanent consequences from damage to their teeth and gums.

Also many experts do not know how much damage can be done to the body from absorbing the bleaching chemicals into the circulation. This should also be a consideration. Will the chemicals suppress the immune system? No one really knows at this point how safe tooth whitening is. So make sure to do your research before you whiten your teeth!
